The UN General Assembly designated 5 June as World Environment Day, which marked the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Therefore, World Environment Day acts as a global platform to spearhead awareness and adopt suitable actions on environmental matters. World Environment Day has contributed to creating campaigns that reveal the significance of solving rising problems and motivates people, organizations, and communities to embrace actions to protect the environment for future generations. The environment is important due to the launch of World Environment Day to tackle global environmental problems.
First, the environment is important since it ensures that life on the planet is successful. Everything used for having optimal life emerges from its aspects, such as animals, land, water, and air. This situation has contributed to the determination to reduce environmental pollution to avoid adverse effects on people intellectually, economically, socially, emotionally, and physically. For instance, trees and forests assist in absorbing gases and filtering the air. On the other hand, plants purify water, retain natural balance, and decrease the possibility of a flood. Therefore, the environment makes human life on Earth possible.
Secondly, the launching of World Environment Day aimed at inspiring worldwide awareness and actions for the environment. This day helps to promote advancement on environmental scopes of Sustainable Development. As a result, major companies, non-governmental organizations, celebrities, governments, and communities globally adopt this day to champion a healthy environment.
Saudi Arabia is part of the international community since it has engaged in several environmental initiatives and agreements to tackle global environmental problems. Specifically, the country has subscribed to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This agreement intends to check greenhouse gas concentrations in the air to limit hazardous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. Also, Saudi Arabia is part of the Paris Agreement, which means it aspires to reduce global warming below 2 degrees Celsius and launch strategies to curb temperature increase. Generally, the Kingdom has ratified international agreements such as UNFCCC and Paris Agreement.
Additionally, the Kingdom plays a crucial role in implementing sustainable development and environmental protection. One element that characterizes this claim is its Vision 2030, where the country has developed a comprehensive plan highlighting its goals for enhancing environmental sustainability. Also, this situation reflects in the executed environmental regulations and standards to safeguard the natural resources and environment through the conservation of biodiversity, waste management, and water pollution control. Further, the region has executed several green initiatives and projects to safeguard the environment and enhance sustainable practices. A good example is the “Saudi Green Initiative” which intends to raise the green cover of Saudi Arabia by renovating degraded lands and planting many trees. This part reveals that Saudi Arabia has executed sustainable development and environmental protection through its Vision 2030 and green initiatives and projects.
Vision 2030 of Saudi Arabia has set its goals to protect the environment. One key way in which this strategic roadmap strives to achieve this objective is through sustainable transportation. Specifically, Vision 2030 stresses the growth of sustainable transportation systems, such as the adoption of electric vehicles and the expansion of public transport. Similarly, plans are underway to improve infrastructure to decrease air pollution that usually occurs through traffic congestion. Therefore, Vision 2030 of Saudi Arabia focuses on protecting the environment using sustainable transportation.
Finally, Saudi Arabia was able to achieve qualitative achievements in the field of combating desertification compared to previous years. The National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification had planted over 12 million wild trees and shrubs. This achievement shows a good sign since by 2030 Saudi Arabia would have attained meaningful contributions.
To conclude, the environment is essential since it supports human life. This situation inspired The UN General Assembly to set a specific date for World Environment Day. Similarly, Saudi Arabia is aware of this importance since it is involved in various environmental initiatives and agreements to curb global environmental problems. As a result, the region has implemented sustainable development and environmental protection processes. Vision 2030 plays a key role in driving these efforts, which has been successful as seen through the field of combating desertification.
